Bio Class Tree LabLast week students mapped the trees around PAHS and classified them as small, medium, and large.  From their data students were able to calculate the total CO2 fixation and O2 production in a year around the school. They were also able to calculate how many humans the O2 would support in a year and how many years it takes these trees to remove the CO2 generated in a year by a single car. The activity was “real science” in action because groups had different data and classified trees differently; the difference in data led to students to reflect on the scientific process and how the activity could be improved so we all classify the same plants as trees, accurately classifying the tree size, and have maps with the same information.

The added bonus was students got to be outside and they truly appreciated getting in the field and being ecologist for the day!
