Solving CrimesStudents in Forensic Science Class are learning that fingerprints are unique patterns of ridges and valleys on the surface of the skin of our fingers and thumbs. They can be used to identify people because each person's fingerprints are different. To find their own fingerprints the students used a method called dusting. Here's what Mrs. Hudgins taught them:

1. Get a small brush (like a makeup brush) and a container of powder (like baby powder or fingerprint powder).

2. Dip the brush into the powder and tap off any excess.

3. Gently brush the powder onto the surface where you think there might be fingerprints (like a doorknob or a piece of paper).

4. Look for any ridge patterns that appear in the powder. These will be the fingerprints.

5. If you can't see the fingerprints clearly, you can try shining a flashlight at an angle to create shadows that will make the ridges more visible.

Remember, fingerprints are fragile and can easily be smudged or destroyed. Be careful not to touch the surface where you are dusting or you could accidentally remove the fingerprints you're trying to find.
