Remote Learning Updates

Good afternoon Parents, Students & Families of PAHS!    
I wanted to take a moment to reiterate my gratitude and amazement at your flexibility, persistence and patience over the past week as PAHS has transitioned to an online environment.  In the 10 years that I have had the good fortune to be Principal of PAHS, I'm not sure I've ever been as proud.  As expected, not everything has been perfect and we (as a group of educators) are learning very quickly what works best and how to structure learning. Again, thank you for raising such amazing young men and women - they have been so helpful and patient through this process!  
For the students, I want you to know we miss you very much and cannot wait to reunite in the physical setting.  Know that this has been as much of a challenge for us as it has been for you.  I can tell you that the most enjoyable part of my job has always been the interaction with each of you daily.  It is our goal to find a way to bring some normalcy back in our lives.  With that being said, we are going to look to create some amazing and fun virtual activities in the near future.  We have been discussing creating a school wide virtual talent show that will include both students and teachers, a school wide spirit day, as well as a host of other fun and engaging activities for all to be a part of.  I also plan to restart the morning announcements that will require the support of many.   At this point we are still holding out hope that we will return to PAHS before the end of the school year.  If anything changes along the way we will obviously keep you posted.  We will keep you posted on upcoming events that will be rescheduled or postponed due to the school closure.  
Where do we go from here in terms of your classes and learning on a daily basis?  With the recent announcement by Governor Wolf that the school closures will extend to April 6th, we obviously feel the need to make some adjustments.  Now that we've had time to make a transition and adjust, we at PAHS are beginning to prepare for a transition to the delivery of new instruction.  As you know, we used last week (and will continue to do so this week) as an opportunity for students and faculty to adjust to an online environment and to focus on a review of essential skills and previously covered content. This will also allow us to get laptops to many of our students who are still in need.   Beginning next Monday, March 30th, our teachers and staff will begin to deliver new material online via Canvas.  We will be following the schedule outlined below:

A couple of important points about the schedule itself:
Not every class "meets" every day.  Rather than try and have all periods meet, we will focus on providing more time for fewer classes in a single day to promote deeper learning. Classes that normally meet on odd/even days are designated above as well.  
75 minute blocks - while a generous amount of time has been devoted to each block, please do not expect that you'll have to listen to a lecture for 75 minutes straight.  Our goal is to provide instruction coupled with learning activities, independent practice and assessment throughout that time.  
Flexibility - I know many of us have several children at home, in many cases in different buildings of PASD.  All are trying to move forward with online learning.  With that said, while there are suggested times, teachers at PAHS will be posting videos of instruction and materials that will allow students to access materials at any time. Links to live sessions will be posted in announcements, and recordings will be posted in the modules.  Teachers will be available via email, Canvas and virtually to help!  
Hotspots - I realize many of us may be in need of Wi-Fi access and data during this transition.  Comcast has generously decided to open its Xfinity Wifi Network for free during this difficult time.  This can be a wonderful resource for those of you that may need access to Wi-fi or data.  Please visit the link to get more information.
My belief and hope is that this change will be a bit easier than our initial transition.  Teachers and staff will be sharing information with students during this week and what to expect in each individual class.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this change and the schedule moving forward!  Again, THANK YOU!!!
